The assassination of the blogger “Um Fahd” in central Baghdad

In a scene closer to “jungle law,” last night, Friday, witnessed the killing of the blogger Ghofran Mahdi Suwadi, known as “Um Fahad,” after 20 days had passed since her altercation with the media figure Dalia Naeem, during which they mentioned the names of senior officers.

Surveillance cameras in the Zayouna area of central Baghdad captured footage of an armed individual on a motorcycle hiding behind a fence. He then approached the victim’s car, opened the door, and emptied his gun inside it before stealing the victim’s phone and swiftly fleeing on his motorcycle.

Activists on social media shared images of the incident, linking it to Um Fahad’s recent dispute with Dalia Naeem. Some others confirmed that the scenario involving influencers and bloggers had ended with Um Fahad’s murder.

The Ministry of Interior announced early Saturday, in a brief statement received by “Al-Alam Al-Jadeed,” that it had “formed a specialized team to investigate the circumstances of the killing of a well-known woman on social media by unknown assailants in the Zayouna area of the capital, Baghdad.” The statement also denied “reports circulated by the media about the arrest of the suspect in the incident.”

The assailant carried out the assassination using a 9mm handgun, firing at the victim inside a Cadillac car. Notably, the assailant did not hastily leave the scene but rather stole the victim’s phone, indicating that the motive behind the attack might have been to obtain the victim’s phone rather than targeting the victim directly, according to a security source.

Activists also circulated a video in which Um Fahad’s brother requested the security forces to apprehend his sister’s killer and “get her justice.”

Meanwhile, the blogger Mujahid Al-Tai tweeted via the “X” platform, “An armed assailant assassinated the blogger known as ‘Um Fahad’ inside her car in Baghdad after mutual threats and disputes with another blogger, with suspicions of connections to extortion schemes led by officers in the Interior and Defense ministries.”

Similarly, the blogger Arkan Al-Shammari, in a post on the “X” platform, stated, “Um Fahad was the black box in Iraq, and her murder was due to the files she possessed and the theft of her phones by the killer, confirming that theory. It is worth mentioning that Um Fahad had previously threatened on social media to publish videos and photos related to leaders, politicians, and high-ranking officials in Iraq.”

Informed sources on April 7th reported that the journalist and blogger Dalia Naeem filed an official complaint against the accused Ghofran Mahdi Suwadi, also known as “Um Fahad,” and the advisor to the Minister of Interior, Brigadier Saad Maan, accusing them of kidnapping and torturing her.

An security force transported journalist Dalia Naeem to Yarmouk Hospital in Baghdad in the early hours of April 7th after an attempted abduction, the details of which remain unclear. However, preliminary investigations indicate that the kidnappers decided to throw her out of the car, resulting in several injuries.

This coincided with an announcement by the spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Brigadier Yahya Rasool, regarding a blackmail network led by officers in the ministries of Interior and Defense, including an officer whose name was mentioned in the altercation between Um Fahad and Dalia Naeem.

Numerous videos circulating on social media show officers from various security branches inside nightclubs, exchanging greetings with each other or with some leaders. Additionally, videos of famous women leveraging their relationships with officers in the Ministry of Interior and others during any street confrontations are also being shared.

“Al-Alam Al-Jadeed” had previously published a detailed report on the recently uncovered extortion network, revealing the investigation of 100 officers in the Ministry of Interior suspected of involvement. This report, along with similar ones, including an extensive report on the relationship between officers in the intelligence agency and other security agencies, with female celebrities, has garnered attention.
